HOSTING

Hosting Chernobyl Children

If you would like to get involved with hosting for two or 4 weeks please get in touch

Hosting is fun

The children are aged ten or 11 when they come to stay with us. They are active and  are very appreciative of the opportunity they have been given to spend four weeks here.  As well as providing the recuperation that benefits them they also learn a lot about life our culture. As a host you will also learn something of what it is like  for them at home.  With computer communications many youngsters keep in touch so that you can even follow their progress after they return home.

Health Benefits

Their stay here, away from the raised radio-active pollution that still exists at home has been shown by research to improve the immune systems of affected children which helps to prolong their lives.  That is because while they are here, in a clean environment eating "clean" food, their vital organs lose any toxins that have built up since birth that may be present and which can go on to cause thyroid and other cancers.  When the children return to the Chernobyl area they are more healthy and more able to deal with the toxins that they return to.  Their immune systems, which may have become compromised, are therefore stronger and they are more able to fight off winter infections.

Language?  Food? - No problem!

The children speak Russian but that is no barrier to communications.  Pointing, thumbs up, miming, smiling and showing are some of the tactics that work well.  The children are keen to learn and they will all understand basic language like "yes", "no", "please", "thank you" and so on.

The children enjoy most of the things that we eat.  They are typical children so may have fads and preferences but no more so than you would expect.

What's involved

If you decide you would like to host we will visit you to explain everything in more detail.  All hosts have to complete a DBS check and we regret that we are not able to consider single men (but if you are a single man and would like to get involved there are other ways that you can help us).

If you have living with you children of similar age you may host one or two children but for anyone that doesn't have their own children we ask that you look after two.  That works well because two children will play together and are far less likely to get homesick whereas a ten or eleven year old on their own might.

While the children are here we run activities and trips during all weekdays.  As a host you will drop your child(ren) off at our base in Broadstone in the morning and collect them later in the afternoon, a bit like a slightly longer school day.  Hosts (and their children) are welcome - and - encouraged to come out with the group to help supervise if possible.
